Supplement Review: Glutamine

You may have heard of glutamine at some stage. Glutamine is a common sports supplement that is often used by bodybuilders and gym goers. L Glutamine is the most abundant amino acid in the human body and during intense exercise; your levels of L Glutamine may fall. Glutamine can boost your immune system, provides and anti catabolic effect on your muscles and boosts your natural levels of growth hormone.
Glutamine makes up around 70% of all human skeletal muscle tissue, and levels of glutamine are depleted during times of stress such as exercise.

Glutamine is a non essential amino acid, meaning that the human body produces it naturally. An oral dose of glutamine of two grams has been shown to increase growth hormone levels by around four times normal amount.  If you are involved in regular weight training or sporting activity, glutamine would be a good supplement choice that can have many positive benefits.

There are several seasons for supplementing with L Glutamine, including:

Decreased muscle catabolism
Increased growth hormone levels
Reduced recovery time
Stimulates protein synthesis
Glutamine supports the immune system
Glutamine can enhance your mood
Glutamine can reduce the chance of overtraining

There are few supplements that I would openly recommend trying, but Glutamine is one of the exceptions. Glutamine will not have a miraculous result on your body but it can improve your immune system, support muscle growth and help support your recovery which are three things every athlete should look for in a supplement. If you find you get ill often when training then supplementing with L-Glutamine could help improve your immune system.
